Introduction

Poseidon in Age of Mythology: Retold is a raid-heavy, cavalry-centric Greek god. His strength comes from fast early food (Lure), cheaper Stables, and cavalry speed bonuses that let you pressure with Hippeus while safely scaling to multiple Town Centers.

For classic AoM/Titans Poseidon, see the Poseidon's Guide on this site.

Poseidon Bonuses (Retold)

  • Lure god power — attracts animals to a point, giving huge early food
  • Stables and Markets cost -30%
  • Cavalry, caravans, and myth units move +0.4 faster
  • Market exchange rates +15% better
  • Militia spawn when buildings are destroyed — almost Hoplite strength, free
  • Free Hippocampus from first Dock for water scouting

Core Gameplan

Win condition: Early-mid game map control via Hippeus raiding + Militia trades, then transition into cavalry core with Hero/Myth support for late game.

Play style: Wide, mobile, and greedy — raid constantly to force your opponent into a defensive posture while you add Town Centers.

Build Order — Aggressive Hermes Classical

Archaic Age

  1. Drop Lure on a safe, large hunt near your TC at 0:10-0:20
  2. All starting villagers to food (on Lure hunt)
  3. 1-2 villagers to wood after initial houses
  4. 6-8 on food, then 3-4 on wood
  5. 2-3 villagers to gold when you have ~50-75 float
  6. Build Temple as soon as resources allow
  7. Advance with Hermes — fast 3:00-3:30 age-up thanks to Lure food

Early Classical

  1. Immediately drop 1st Stable, then 2nd Stable (30% cheaper = easy)
  2. Keep TC queued — never idle villager production
  3. Continuous Hippeus from both Stables
  4. Raid exposed hunt, woodlines, and gold
  5. Deny enemy 2nd TC timing

Economy Target

ResourceVillagers
Food10-12
Gold8-10
Wood6-8

Delay farms until Lure + remaining hunt are exhausted.

Hippeus Raiding

Hippeus are your bread and butter — fast, cheap (with Stable discount), and spammable.

  • Keep 2-6 Hippeus detached from main army for raiding
  • Hit hunters, woodlines, and especially gold miners
  • Use speed to avoid full fights — kill villagers, pull back, repeat
  • Lord of Horses tech gives cavalry LOS and HP regen for sustained raiding

Militia Tactics

Every building destroyed spawns Militia — almost Hoplite-tier, costing you nothing:

  • Trade buildings for time: If they siege a forward Granary, Militia pop in to kill exposed siege
  • Defensive trap: Cluster cheap buildings near chokes — if lost, instant local defenders
  • It's often correct to let a cheap building die rather than pull villagers

Minor God Choices

Classical — Hermes (Always)

  • Ceasefire: Secure forward TCs, defend all-ins, cancel enemy god powers
  • Speed/mobility focus synergizes perfectly with cavalry bonuses

Ceasefire + Forward TC

This is a core Poseidon trick:

  1. Start building a TC aggressively near enemy territory or key gold
  2. If they move to snipe it, pop Ceasefire
  3. TC finishes undisturbed
  4. Wall and tower around it

Combined with Watch Tower upgrade (Poseidon starts with Sentry Towers), this gives excellent forward map presence.

Matchup Adjustments

vs Infantry-Heavy (Norse, Some Greeks)

  • Don't brawl Hippeus into mass Spearmen head-on
  • Multi-prong raids to drag them around
  • Let Militia from forward buildings help vs siege
  • Add Heroes + myth units (Hydra/Nemean, later Colossi) as front line

vs Archers/Light Ranged

  • Hippeus shine — dive back line, delete archers, retreat before Spearmen arrive
  • Prioritize pierce armor upgrades from Armory

vs Water Maps

  • Free Hippocampus from first Dock for scouting
  • Dionysus in Heroic for Scylla gives dominant late navy
  • Naval control = gold control

Key Tips

  • Fast Classical with Lure. You should hit Classical faster than most civs — use that tempo advantage
  • Double Stable immediately. -30% cost means this is very affordable — get Hippeus flowing ASAP
  • Scout for Relics. Speed, cavalry, or gold-eco Relics are especially valuable for Poseidon
  • Punish greedy 2nd TCs. If you see them building a TC, hit it with continuous Hippeus before it finishes
  • Accept building losses. Forward buildings dying = free Militia. Turn every loss into a time/position advantage
  • Trade is strong. Poseidon's +15% market rates and faster caravans make late-game trade very efficient
