Loki: earn myth pressure through useful combat
By AoM Guides · retold
Support Hersirs with a real human army, preserve spawned value, and stop an engagement before combat income becomes an excuse for losing it.
Combat is a means, not the win condition
Loki’s myth-oriented identity rewards active combat and can add myth units through his distinctive spawning system. That makes pressure attractive, but a lost army remains a lost army. Start with a reachable military objective and count the ordinary resources, map control, and surviving troops involved in each engagement.
Combine Hersirs with ordinary soldiers that can handle the enemy escort. Preserve the human formation as myth units join it, and keep new monsters away from hostile heroes until they have useful targets.
Build a formation that allows Hersirs to work
Hersirs provide an important anti-myth role, but they still need an army around them. If the opponent fields substantial human ranged damage, sending heroes directly through its screen can lose the specialist before it reaches the monster. Add ordinary support for the enemy composition and approach from an angle that keeps target access practical.
Use ranged troops against suitable targets while a durable component occupies the front. A mobile group can threaten exposed ranged support, but should not abandon the rest of the army in a deep chase. The formation must remain useful when the opponent reinforces, rather than only during the first contact.
When a myth unit joins your force, reassess where it can attack safely. A new monster appearing near a prepared enemy hero does not automatically turn the engagement favorable. Move it away from the specialist counter when possible, and let human troops punish the enemy response.
Pressure a resource you can reinforce
Choose a gold mine, hunting area, or production route within practical reinforcement distance. Norse infantry can construct forward buildings, but those builders also represent fighting strength. Build during a controlled window, leaving enough troops to cover the work.
If the opponent retreats behind a strong center, take useful space instead of attacking into defensive fire for the sake of more combat. Occupying their next resource or protecting your own outside food can give the army a lasting return without an immediate building kill.
Continue worker production and update dropsites as resources move. Losing your economic rhythm while controlling a complicated fight can erase the value of successful military micro. Simplify the army’s tasks when attention is stretched.
Use information for the next rotation
Spy is most useful on a target likely to reveal meaningful movement. Consider whether you need to watch an army, a reinforcement route, or an economic relocation. A unit that stays in a familiar location may provide less value than one that travels through the area you need to understand.
Use the information to prepare an interception or make your own resource move safer. Do not treat vision as permission to chase through unseen terrain around the target. The rest of the enemy force and the defensive position still matter.
Know the retreat point
Withdraw before enemy reinforcement or target access turns the trade against you. Preserving existing human units, heroes, and monsters gives the next pressure cycle a stronger start. A favor gain or another spawn opportunity is rarely worth sacrificing the entire established formation.
In the replay, inspect the last favorable moment of the first attack. Compare it with the moment you actually ordered retreat. If the army remained only because you expected another free unit, change that decision rule. Loki’s combat rewards should strengthen useful pressure, not disguise an engagement that already stopped paying.
Keep a separate selection for valuable monsters when practical. This makes it easier to withdraw them from enemy heroes while the human screen continues the engagement.
Keep hunting and combat income separate
Damage to huntable animals does not advance myth-unit spawning. Keep hunting focused on food income, and pursue military value through useful engagements with the opponent.
