Original AoM Norse: control the hunt
By AoM Guides · vanilla
Use Ulfsark construction, mobile Ox Carts, and a supported army to secure hunting and maintain pressure.
Connect the army and economy
In original Age of Mythology, Ulfsarks construct the Norse buildings, Ox Carts move with the economy, and combat supplies favor. Keep infantry available to build and defend while Gatherers move to the next hunting area.
Make the next hunt the objective
Scout the food you intend to use after the initial source. Identify the route for Gatherers and the Ox Cart, the nearest hostile approach, and the position your army can occupy to protect the move. The dropsite’s mobility removes one construction task; it does not provide vision or a military escort.
If the opponent controls the obvious next hunt, choose between contesting it with a real force and using another source temporarily. Sending the economy there first creates a forced defense on the enemy’s terms. Move when you have information and a retreat route, not only when the current food becomes empty.
Great Hunt should support a food source you can harvest. Do not create an attractive concentration in an area the opponent can occupy before your Gatherers arrive. Follow the cast with the workers and protection needed to turn the potential food into actual income.
Build with infantry during a safe window
An Ulfsark constructing a forward building is not simultaneously adding its full fighting value to the nearby engagement. Keep enough army present to cover construction, and begin the work before the entire enemy force arrives. A forward position should shorten reinforcement to a named objective rather than simply stand as close as possible to the opposing center.
Preserve builders when retreating. Losing all available construction infantry can interrupt the next production or defensive structure even if the ordinary economy survives. Re-form the force near a connected position and extend again when reinforcements are ready.
Keep the correct support near the front
Hersirs are important against myth units, but their specialist role does not make them the ideal answer to every human army. Protect their access to the monster while other troops engage its screen. Throwing Axemen support against appropriate infantry, and mobile troops can threaten exposed targets without forcing the whole army to chase.
Keep the support suited to the actual fight. Check which enemy units your heroes can reach, use ranged support where it can attack safely, and reserve a mobile group for exposed workers or ranged troops.
Let combat favor support useful pressure
Choose fights for a resource, a favorable trade, or a reinforcement advantage. Favor earned while losing an entire force does not restore the map control that force provided. When the opponent retreats into strong defensive fire, occupy the useful approaches or secure your own outside economy instead of attacking for the sake of activity.
Continue worker and military production throughout the pressure cycle. If controlling several groups stops both, simplify to one coherent army until the economic rhythm remains stable under combat.
Replay drill
Follow the first Ox Cart move and the first forward building. Were both supported by vision and troops, or did one force the army into an emergency response? Then find the last favorable moment before the first retreat. Practice recognizing that point earlier. A surviving army can protect the next hunt, build again, and repeat pressure; a destroyed army leaves all three jobs unfinished.
