Immortal Pillars: expand with a purpose
By AoM Guides · retold
Understand Favored Land, Peasants and Kuafus, then build a Chinese position that can support an army.
Expand from a working economy
Immortal Pillars combines Peasants, Kuafus, an Imperial Academy hero roster, and building-based Favored Land. Expand toward resources your army can hold and place infrastructure that supports gathering, favor income, and reinforcement together.
Use buildings to sustain favor
Buildings extend Favored Land and generate favor. Add useful defended coverage around resources and reinforcement routes. Closely overlapping structures offer less new territory, so choose each outside building for the ground it helps you hold.
Give each worker type a useful assignment
Peasants and Kuafus have different strengths. Use their current tooltips to understand the costs and tasks involved, and plan construction so it does not pull too much gathering away at a vulnerable moment. A builder on the far side of the map cannot help finish an emergency structure at home.
In the opening, keep economic recruitment running and arrange efficient resource access. Reserve the resources needed for the next age requirements and the first army. If you spend on speculative infrastructure too early, you may have impressive territory on the minimap but no troops to defend it. The correct expansion pace depends on what scouting shows, not the attractiveness of the civilization bonus in isolation.
Connect Favored Land to an objective
Before placing an outside building, ask what that location enables: a gold mine, a protected food source, a shorter reinforcement path, or a staging point that constrains the enemy. Buildings that support each other are easier to defend than scattered investments. Consider where units can retreat and where the next defensive layer would go if the opponent arrives with more force.
Scout an expansion site before committing valuable construction time. An enemy army just outside vision can turn a normal economic decision into a costly loss. If the opponent is pressing, consolidate the existing area and use production before buying another unprotected position. Expansion is profitable only while the resulting territory remains usable.
Choose military development around the threat
Choose early troops by their target bonuses and the opponent’s composition. Use range and movement to keep the counters attacking the units they beat, and cover gaps in the army before saving for a later-age option.
Military-building enhancements involve a choice between defensive and offensive benefits. Make that choice for the job the building must perform. A forward reinforcement point and a protected production core may need different support. Avoid upgrading several sites speculatively while you cannot afford continuous unit production from the buildings already finished.
Heroes trained through the Imperial Academy can provide scouting, support, and answers to myth units. Protect the relevant specialist and bring ordinary troops to handle the enemy escort. A healing or control opportunity is valuable only when the hero survives long enough to use it.
Use the major power as a timed resource
For Fuxi, Peach Blossom Spring rewards a deliberate collection decision. Leaving the stockpile to grow can improve its eventual value, but waiting is not automatically best if you need the resources to survive or to finish a decisive army. Treat the choice as a trade between later income and the immediate position.
For Nüwa, assign Creation’s temporary workers immediately. Give them a safe, reachable task and avoid treating their output as permanent income in your future budget. For Shennong, establish a farm area worth protecting before expecting an investment in that area to anchor the game. These are distinct plans; one generic Chinese opening cannot capture all three power decisions.
Practice a controlled second position
Play a practice match where your only expansion goal is one additional defended resource. Review the cost of the buildings, the time workers spent traveling, and the army available when the position first became useful. If the opponent had attacked then, could you have reinforced? Improve that sequence before attempting broad map coverage. A compact, working expansion teaches more than a large empire built against no resistance.
