Gaia: grow an economy around ground you can hold
By AoM Guides · retold
Use safe forests, economic buildings, and a working army to convert Gaia’s territory into sustained production.
Grow behind a real defensive plan
Gaia’s economic and building identity rewards development, but it does not make a small army immune to pressure. Choose a connected working area, defend its approaches, and use the resulting safety to keep Citizens gathering. Growth is successful when it produces income you can spend while the opponent is active.
Regroup on Lush
In Retold, eligible economic buildings spread Lush that regenerates your own units and buildings. Use the covered area to regroup survivors and reinforce the front. Check which nearby structures provide coverage before choosing the retreat route.
Use that terrain to support a practical regrouping location. Retreat damaged troops while they can still reach safety, maintain a screen, and return them to the force when ready. Regeneration adds value to survivors; it cannot recover units that were surrounded and killed before the withdrawal.
Do not erect a decorative chain of infrastructure through territory the opponent already controls. The ordinary resources and construction time invested there compete with the army required to make it safe. Extend the working area in steps you can reinforce.
Place Forest for usable gathering
Choose a location with good Citizen access, adequate working space, and a defendable approach. Faster-gathered wood is valuable only while workers can remain on it. Avoid placing the resource where your army must cross an exposed route every time an enemy raid appears.
Place Forest with movement in mind. Leave clear routes for Citizens and reinforcements, then check the paths around the trees before moving the army elsewhere.
Keep watching the next gold and food. An excellent wood position does not solve a forced transition on another resource. Plan those moves while the army still has time to clear and support them.
Spend economic strength on the missing military role
Build enough main-line troops to hold a formation, then add the Counter Barracks unit appropriate to the opposing force. An army consisting only of specialists can fail when the enemy changes composition or reaches a vulnerable back line. Add the support needed for the new threat before expanding the same troop line.
Promote heroes for useful anti-myth access rather than automatically upgrading every unit. Maintain Oracle favor coverage so the selected promotions and myth support are affordable. A disrupted Oracle network can explain why an apparently healthy ordinary economy cannot complete its intended army.
Choose growth or reinforcement from information
If the opponent is reinforcing a sustained attack, put resources into a defense that keeps Citizens working. If scouting confirms a retreat or economic investment, you may have room for expansion or advancement. Do not infer safety from the mere absence of units on your screen; watch the routes to the next resource.
When you move out, leave enough protection or mobility to keep the economic core usable. Gaia’s development should finance repeated reinforcement, allowing the army to hold a contested area after the first battle rather than winning one fight and stopping production.
Practice the first extension
Pick one outside resource as your only early expansion objective. Review the army present when Citizens begin working, the Lush coverage actually available, and the route an enemy raid would take. If the position survives only because the opponent never visited it, improve the timing or location. A compact defended economy is a stronger foundation than a large area of attractive terrain you cannot hold.
