Extended Edition: practice a reliable opening
By AoM Guides · extended
Connect worker assignments to the first army, keep production active under pressure, and use replay checks to improve one decision at a time.
Start with the first army’s job
Choose a limited objective for the opening: protect an outside hunt, contest a gold mine, remove forward production, or create room for another settlement. The worker assignments and advance should fund an army that can do that job while the economy keeps producing.
Use a consistent map type and game speed while practicing. Note the available food, the distance to the opponent, and the routes between your working resources. A protected starting area gives you more room for development; exposed food and a short enemy approach require earlier vision and defense.
Connect worker assignments to purchases
Plan the opening around the next purchases. Food sustains workers, advancement, and many military units. Wood prepares dropsites, population space, and production. Gold funds the units and technologies that complete the intended composition. Move workers when one of those purchases is blocked, and keep gathering efficient as nearby resources run out.
Before advancing, check the required buildings, population room, and resources for the first military batch. An age advance creates access to new options, but the army still needs to be paid for and trained. Keep a builder and the necessary construction resources ready so the new production can begin promptly.
When resources accumulate without useful purchases, inspect the queues. A population block, missed production cycle, or unavailable building can hold the opening back even with enough income. Correct that interruption before adding more infrastructure.
Scout before the commitment
Find the opponent’s first production and watch the units that emerge. A forward building, a mobile raid, and a sustained army push demand different responses. Continue observing reinforcements so that your production matches the force approaching your resources.
Keep one early troop group close enough to protect the most exposed workers. If the opponent commits to pressure, delay a discretionary upgrade or expansion and complete the defense. If scouting confirms a safe window, finish the planned investment while leaving enough military nearby to hold it.
Know the route to your next gold and food before the current sources are exhausted. Scout that ground, clear it if needed, and move workers with support. A planned resource move lets the army choose its position before the enemy forces a reaction.
Give each troop a role
Build a frontline that can hold the intended engagement, then add the support that answers the enemy’s damage. Keep ranged troops behind a screen with room to retreat. Bring heroes when hostile myth units are part of the army, and position them where they can attack those targets while ordinary soldiers occupy the escort.
Use a mobile group to threaten exposed workers or ranged troops only when the main force can remain safe without it. Start with one main army and one simple secondary task. Add more independent groups once worker production and reinforcement continue reliably during combat.
Review the first interruption
Watch the first few minutes of the replay and identify the earliest avoidable delay. Check worker creation, walking time, population blocks, resource shortages, and empty military queues. Fix the first recurring interruption before trying to accelerate the entire sequence.
Then inspect the first serious fight. Follow a counter group and note whether it attacked the intended target, spent time walking, or became trapped. Adjust the approach or support so that the army can use the strength you paid for.
Practice one change at a time
Repeat the opening with one adjustment: scout the next mine earlier, reserve population before the age-up, or add the missing counter to the first army. Keep the rest of the plan consistent enough to compare results.
Measure success by the position after the first engagement. Workers should be gathering, reinforcements arriving, and the next resource available. Once that cycle works under pressure, increase the difficulty or add another objective. A reliable opening gives you enough information and income to make the next decision.
