We will now learn how to use the water tool in Retold to create water.
Terrain -> Water Tool
Access the water tool either by clicking the paint water icon, or selecting ‘water tool’ via the terrain dropdown menu.
Now the water tool is open. You will see a list of available waterbodies the game has as default, you will also see a paint area checkbox on the left side of the screen which is unchecked when you first open the water tool.
You will notice your cursor has changed to a circular box on the map and brush settings have popped up. If you click on the map, the area of the circle (or the brush) will paint your chosen water to that location, with the settings specified. If you click and drag, you will be able to pain the water as you move your move.
There are four general water settings as described below. You can filter all of these except shallow by type by clicking the arrow dropdown menu near ‘all’ at the top left of the water tool box. Next to this is a text box, if you type ‘shallow’ in here you can then filter all the shallow water.
Ocean
Large shorelines and waves with turbulence
Lake
Shoreline ripples with a calm centre
River
Directional water movement and ripples
Shallow
Fairly still water which can be traversed by units and naval units
If the ‘paint area’ checkbox is ticked, clicking and dragging will paint a red meshwork over the map which will be converted to water after you depress the left mouse button.
When you are painting water you may want greater control over your brush. We can make it bigger, smaller and even change the shape by using the brush settings option.
With the water tool still open, review the brush settings box. You can slide the scaler to change the size or click the buttons to change the shape. This is also possible via hotkeys:
- Size: 1 – 0 for corresponding size
- Size: - (smaller) and + (larger) (only with brush tool open)
- Shape: Circle [ and Rectangle ]
Please note: The rectangular brush cannot paint water.
Brush settings
After you have painted your water there is the option of replacing the water and using the beautification tool. The edit water tool will let you do this. Click the button to open it.
The edit water tool
With the edit water tool open, left click on a waterbody and it will be selected. This is denoted by red shading around the edges of the water. Any button you now click on the edit water tool will now apply to the selected water.
- Clicking another water type and then clicking ‘update water’ will change the water type of your selection.
- Beautify will add small embellishments around the water such as rocks and plants. It will also change the shore terrain.
- Remove water will remove the waterbody. This keeps the terrain elevation.
That concludes this section on how to use the water tool. Water can be painted with triggers, but that is more advanced and beyond the scope of this article. You can mix water types and manipulate the terrain elevation underneath to make very deep or shallow water. Raising the terrain too much will remove your water.
