We will now learn how to use the forest tool in Retold to create forests.
Terrain -> Forest Tool
Access the forests tool either by clicking the forest tool icon, or selecting ‘forest tool’ via the terrain dropdown menu.
Now the forest tool is open. You will see a list of available forests the game has as default, you will also see two sliders on the bottom left side of the screen corresponding to tree density and underbrush density.
You will notice your cursor has changed to a circular box on the map and brush settings have popped up. If you click on the map, the area of the circle (or the brush) will paint your chosen forest to that location, with the settings specified. If you click and drag, you will be able to pain the forest as you move your move.

When you are painting the forest you may want greater control over your brush. We can make it bigger, smaller and even change the shape by using the brush settings option.
With the forest tool still open, review the brush settings box. You can slide the scaler to change the size or click the buttons to change the shape. This is also possible via hotkeys:
- Size: 1 – 0 for corresponding size
- Size: - (smaller) and + (larger) (only with brush tool open)
- Shape: Circle [ and Rectangle ]

That concludes this section on how to use the forest tool. You can of course place trees manually, move individual trees as well as using the advanced transformation tool to change scale and rotation. Making custom forests will mean adding further units in to your forest or even creating your own forest template using modding. Don’t forget to change the terrain height, texture, lighting and add more embellishment objects to make your forest come truly alive!
