Introduction

Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent, is an Aztec major god in the Obsidian Mirror expansion for Age of Mythology: Retold. As a god of life, wind, and creation, he plays like a mobility and eco-focused macro god with strong scouting tools.

If you like information advantage, smooth eco, and clean midgame pushes, Quetzalcoatl is your Aztec pick.

Quetzalcoatl Kit (Obsidian Mirror Overview)

  • Feathered serpent major god for the Aztec pantheon
  • Access to units like the Quetzal Bird, an auto-scouting flyer
  • Minor gods and techs oriented around economy, mobility, and ranged support

Core Gameplan

  • Use Quetzal Bird and heroes to fully map the game early
  • Play a strong economic early game (hunt control, safe gold)
  • Hit a crisp midgame timing with upgraded core army
  • Keep the initiative using mobility and vision

Standard Quetzalcoatl Boom-&-Pressure Build

Archaic

  1. Send starting villagers to best nearby hunt; build food drop-off
  2. Train villagers constantly — aim for 7–8 on food
  3. Add 2–3 villagers to wood for houses and early military/eco buildings
  4. Add 2 villagers to gold
  5. Build Temple/ceremonial building when you can without idling TC
  6. Let your Quetzal Bird auto-scout the map; manually steer it toward enemy base, golds, and relics as needed
  7. Click Classical on a standard timing (4:30–5:00) with healthy food/gold banks

Early Classical

  • Drop 2 military buildings focused on ranged + frontline (archers + infantry or cavalry screen)
  • Get early eco techs if safe — especially those that complement your food and gold
  • Use your vision advantage to take fights around enemy hunt and outer gold, not under TC

Army Composition

  • Frontline: Solid Aztec infantry or cavalry depending on matchup
  • Backline: Ranged units that benefit from good positioning (archers, slingers, etc.)
  • Support: Quetzal Bird for vision; select myth units from minors for burst damage or control

Playing to Quetzalcoatl’s Strengths

  • Always know where they are. With flying scouts, there’s no excuse for blind fights
  • Expand confidently. Use your vision to take good 2nd/3rd TC spots or safe long-term gold mines
  • Force relocations. Hit enemy outer resources repeatedly; you can see where they try to hide

Mid/Late Game

  • Once your eco is humming, lean into upgrades and extra production buildings
  • Maintain map control via constant raiding and scout coverage
  • Look for Heroic/Mythic timings when you have upgrade leads and vision on their army position
