Introduction

Huitzilopochtli is the war-and-sun major god of the Aztec pantheon in the Obsidian Mirror expansion for Age of Mythology: Retold. In lore he is the patron of Tenochtitlan; in game he is an aggressive, sacrifice- and war-focused major god.

If you want a brutal, up-tempo Aztec playstyle that rewards constant fighting, Huitzilopochtli is your choice.

Huitzilopochtli Kit (Obsidian Mirror Overview)

  • Major war and sun god for the Aztecs
  • Thematic focus on military might and human sacrifice
  • Minor gods and techs that enhance your soldiers and reward aggressive play

Core Gameplan

  • Fast, military-heavy Classical
  • Early pressure on enemy outer eco
  • Constant trades and battlefield presence
  • Use sacrifice/synergy mechanics to keep your army deadly even when trading units

Huitzilopochtli “War Tempo” Build

Archaic

  1. 4 villagers to food for rapid income
  2. 1–2 villagers to wood for houses and your first military building
  3. 2 villagers to gold
  4. Keep TC queuing villagers non-stop
  5. Build Temple/ceremonial building early — you want myth units and military techs soon
  6. Click Classical slightly earlier than a pure boom, aiming for a sharp first attack

Early Classical

  • Place your first military buildings in a forward or mid-map position if safe
  • Train a mix of strong Aztec soldiers (frontline) and a few fast units for flanks/raids
  • Use your first god power to break key defenses (towers, forward TC, or a big resource camp)
  • Try to keep fights near their resources, not yours

Army & Sacrifice Synergy

  • Lean into techs and minor gods that synergize with constant combat
  • Don’t be afraid to trade armies if your mechanics and techs reward it
  • Focus on denying gold and outer farms to lock them into their base

Midgame & Beyond

  • If your pressure works: secure 2nd TC while keeping production high
  • Add siege options as you approach Heroic/Mythic to actually close games vs turtles
  • Plan for a Titan timing or ultimate push if the game goes very long; Aztecs have tools to finish stalemates

Playstyle Notes

  • Huitzilopochtli wants actions, not turtling — always be looking for the next hit
  • Use multi-pronged attacks to stretch defenses
  • Maintain enough eco behind the aggression — you win by staying ahead in production while they scramble
