Introduction

Freyr is the new Norse major god in Age of Mythology: Retold — a cavalry-focused god with extremely cheap techs and a potent defensive god power that scales with age. He plays as a “tech turtle” Norse: strong defenses, cheap upgrades, and powerful raiding cavalry options through his minor gods.

Freyr Kit (Retold Overview)

  • New Norse major god — fourth Norse option in Retold
  • Tech discount: Technologies cost 50% less food/wood/gold, but take 150% longer to research
  • Potent defense god power that becomes stronger with each age
  • Cavalry-focused minor gods and upgrades
  • Access to unique minor gods like Aer (Tempest) and Vidar (Inferno/Fenrir)

Core Gameplan

  • Safe early eco with Great Hunt + cheap techs
  • Fast Classical with solid defenses
  • Early Armory to start abusing discounted upgrades
  • Transition into cavalry-heavy midgame with strong raiding

Standard Freyr Fast Classical (Defensive)

Archaic Age

  1. 3 villagers + Ox Cart to hunt (cast Great Hunt on big hunt pack)
  2. Queue 1 villager, 1 dwarf → dwarf to gold
  3. Target early layout: 6 food / 1–2 gold / 1 wood
  4. First new dwarf → gold
  5. Next villager → straggler tree for wood (Temple + House)
  6. Scout with Berserk for extra hunt/goats; pull goats to TC
  7. Build Temple with wood villager once resources allow
  8. Place House near TC/towers for extra defense
  9. Pre-age-up eco goal: 6 food, 5 wood, 4 dwarves on gold
  10. Click Classical through preferred minor god (e.g., Freyja for Valkyries/healing)

Transition to Classical

  • While aging: adjust to ~6 food / 5 wood / 4 gold
  • Drop Ox Cart on wood as you move more vills there
  • Use dwarves mainly on gold, villagers on food/wood

Early Classical — Freyr Style

  • Freyr is a defensive, economic Norse god
  • Get early Armory + Hill Fort on key positions (gold/choke)
  • Use Freyr’s cheap techs once stable — eco and military upgrades are 50% off
  • Use his defense god power to fortify a contested area or defend vs pushes
  • Train Gullinbursti (myth unit) to defend near TC/resources

Army Focus

  • Cavalry core (Raiding Cavalry/Jarls) with infantry and Hersirs
  • Freyr’s minor gods provide strong cavalry upgrades and abilities
  • Use cavalry for raiding, infantry for holding chokes

Aggressive Freyr Berserk All-In (Meme Build)

High-risk, high-reward cheese:

  • Opening distribution: 6 food / 1 wood / 1 gold → rest to food
  • Build Temple at 15 pop
  • Send many villagers forward and convert them into Berserks
  • Keep 2–3 on food, 1 on wood (houses), 1 on gold (conversions)
  • Wins or loses quickly — use only if you want chaos

Minor God Paths

Freyr’s minor gods lean toward cavalry and defense. Examples include:

  • Aer: God of sea/storms — Tempest slows/damages enemies in an area
  • Vidar: God of vengeance — Inferno summons Fenrir to charge through enemies

Playstyle Tips

  • Use tech discount wisely. Techs are cheap but slow — queue them early and often
  • Leverage defense GP. Cast in key battles or to hold important gold/TCs
  • Cavalry raiding. Freyr wants to hit eco with fast units, then fall back behind strong defenses
  • Great Hunt early. Same as Odin/Thor — cast on best hunt pack ASAP
  • Don’t over-tech early. Cheap tech is tempting, but you still need units on the field
