Introduction
Amaterasu is the primary aggressive macro goddess of the new Japanese pantheon in Age of Mythology: Retold. She leans into samurai armies, Bushidō XP, and passive gold income that ramps up as the game goes on.
If you enjoy snowballing off strong midgame fights and huge samurai deathballs, Amaterasu is your centerpiece.
Amaterasu Kit (Retold Overview)
- Goddess of the Sun — Japanese major goddess
- Bushidō tiers: Passive gold generation through multiple Bushidō levels (roughly +0.5 up to +5.5 gold/sec at high tiers)
- Samurai/Onna-musha focus: They gain Bushidō XP much faster under Amaterasu
- Strong midgame army: Samurai core with supporting archers and monks
Core Gameplan
- Play solid early eco, then hit a powerful midgame timing with upgraded Samurai
- Keep armies fighting to build Bushidō tiers and gold income
- Transition into 2–3 Town Centers and full-pop samurai + support
Standard Amaterasu Build
Archaic Age
- 4 villagers to food (hunt/berries) — build your first drop-off building
- 2 villagers to wood for early houses and barracks
- Next 2 villagers to gold
- Keep TC producing villagers non-stop
- Drop Temple/Shrine equivalent when you have the resources
- Advance to Classical on a roughly 4–5 minute timing depending on map and pressure
This is a generic safe opening; you can flex more food for faster age-up or more wood for infrastructure based on matchup.
Early Classical
- Drop your first military buildings as you hit Classical — prioritize Samurai unlock
- Train a small core army (Samurai + archers) to defend and skirmish
- Scout for where your first real push will go (gold/hunt/forward TC)
- Start your first key upgrades for Samurai armor/attack as eco allows
Leveraging Bushidō
- Bushidō tiers build up via combat and activity — you want constant, efficient fighting
- Use Samurai and Onna-musha for the most efficient Bushidō XP gain
- Don’t sit passive too long — your gold income and army value are tied to staying active
Army Composition
- Core front line: Samurai
- Ranged support: Japanese archers (vs infantry and light units)
- Cavalry/fast units: To chase and raid if matchup demands it
- Monks/priest-like units: For healing and utility depending on tech path
Macro Tips
- 2nd TC timing: Aim for 2nd TC once you have a stable army and decent map control
- Farm transition: As hunt runs out, get on farms early — samurai armies are food-hungry
- Gold management: Bushidō gold helps, but you still need miners; don’t overestimate passive income
Playstyle Notes
- Amaterasu rewards clean macro and sustained fighting more than cheesy all-ins
- Use your strong samurai core as a hammer — look for key fights around TCs and gold mines
- Once you reach higher Bushidō tiers, your gold economy spikes — convert that into upgrades and extra production buildings
